The residents of Rumah Solehah, a Muslim home for HIV-positive women
and children, were in for a special treat this Raya. The Rotaract Club of
Kuala Lumpur (RACKL) organised a first-time visit to Mid Valley
Megamall for a feast in McDonald’s and to catch Looney Tunes: Back In
Action at Golden Screen Cinemas. The event was made merrier through
the involvement of the Graduate & Student Section (G&S) of the
Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).
A convoy of volunteer drivers negotiated the damp roads to transport the
residents from and to the home in Bandar Tun Razak as the passengers looked
on in awe at the size of the shopping mall and the excitement of going to the
cinema for the first time. A host of other volunteers were on hand to welcome
the troops and lead them to McDonald’s. The children indulged in a sumptuous
lunch and adding to the festive joy, McDonald’s contributed balloons and toys.
The fun did not stop there as the children engaged in a game of ‘pass the parcel’.
The children received the presents while the “baby-sitter” had to serve the
“punishment”.
A pairing system was established whereby each of the 16 children had a
respective volunteer who “baby-sat” throughout the time in the busy complex.
The children were surprisingly well-behaved for their first-ever cinema
experience in unlit surroundings as well as staying put and quiet for the entire
duration of the movie. The kids were richly entertained by the Looney Tunes
characters especially Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.
The children, aged between 10 months and 8 years old, were also presented with
duit raya upon arriving back at Rumah Solehah.
