 Engineering Games 2003 - More Than Just A Game

After almost 3 months of active recruitment, taxing training and thorough preparation, the long anticipated Engineering Games 2003 had arrived! Held at the University Malaya, the second edition of the games was to be launched on the Friday of 19 December 2003. Out of the 10 games (basketball, tennis, volleyball, table tennis, squash, soccer, street soccer, netball, chess and badminton) to be contested, the G&S would be participating in all except street soccer, sending about 80 strong participants to the games. The breakdown of the G&S contingent are as follow: Basketball – 2 teams, Tennis – 1 persons, Volleyball – 1 team, Table Tennis – 1 person, Squash – 3 persons, Soccer – 2 teams, Netball – 1 team, Chess – 4 persons, Badminton 2 mixed doubles, 5 men singles, 1 women singles.

 


The increase of the size of G&S contingent this year also coincides with the increase in number of participating universities. A total of 12 universities will be competing against the IEM-G&S for this year overall EG championship. The universities include Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Multimedia (MMU), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Kolej Universiti Teknikal Malaysia (KUKTM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Kolej Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn (KUITTHO) and Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia (KUKUM). Overall, the total participants for the event are about 700 people.


19 December 2003
 

The first day of the games started as early as 8.00am, with the welcoming and reception of the participants to the games. Upon the arrival of the participants to the 12th college of the University Malaya, the members of the host, busy themselves in arranging for the registration and check in for their precious guest. T-shirts and freebies were distributed to the guests before they checked in to the hostel for settle down. By 11.00 am, all the staying participants had arrived and checked in and the event were halted for lunch and Friday prayers.

 

 

 

By about 3.00pm, the participants were to gather at the front of the 12th college for a rehearsal of the marching and opening ceremony. This was followed by the actual opening ceremony, which begin with the welcoming of the VIPs. As all the contingents completed the march and gathered at the front of the stage, Sdr. Eric Eow Khai Fong, as the Executive Director of the EG2003, presented a speech to welcome the guests of the event. He also motivated his committee to do their best to ensure a smooth and memorable game for the participants. Ir. Prof. Dr. Ruslan Hassan, the Deputy President of IEM come next to give a speech before finally, Datuk Tan Chai Ho were invited to declare the opening ceremony of the games. Immediately after that, the torch of the game was lighted. The opening ceremony was ended with a prayer.

By about 6.00pm, EG Nite was held, with load of performances and activities which encourages interaction among the participants. Lucky draw were also held during this session. By the end of the EG Nite, the participants obviously had enjoyed, as the hall were filled with laughter and smiles. The dinner was held after that.

The first day ended with a team manager and captain briefing on rules and regulations as well as venue, fixtures and schedule for the games.

20 December 2003

The second day of EG2003 is the day of which the games were held. The participants gathered as early as 7.30am at the front of the 12th college in order to be leaded to the game venue. Among the games started earliest were volleyball, basketball, squash and chess. The G&S contingent however, had performed impressively as they managed to win 2 gold and 1silver by as early as 11.00am. Wong Nai Chien, who participating the squash event and Koh Tak Chun who participated the table tennis event each won a gold medal for the G&S. Tsao Kee Jang, who also played in the squash event, won the silver medal. The games got a break at lunch hour but continued after that until late evening. Unfortunately for the G&S, the other teams except for badminton were knocked out. However, the soccer team should also be praised for their sporting spirit, as they had to play in the rain and dark although in the end losing 0-3 to UiTM.

With all the action for participants, the organizing committee never left out the supporters and its own committee members in their planning. Archery and canoeing events were held while the official games being played. A “warehouse” like sale event called Mini Giant also held during the games in order for participants to buy souvenirs.

 

21 December 2003

The entire sports event shall be completed by afternoon of the final day of EG2003. The G&S contingent, however, managed to add 1 silver medal and 2 bronze medals through the badminton game. Tony Cheng Yew Leong and Quek Geok Hoon won a bronze medal from the mixed double event while Lee Cheong San won another bronze in the men’s single event. Yohan Raj, however, managed as runner up in the men single event.

By 1.30pm, the participants proceeded to the Academy of Islamic Studies (API) for the closing ceremony. With the arrival of the VIPs, including Dato Dr. Ng Yen Yen, the Deputy Finance Minister the closing ceremony kicked off with the playing of the Negaraku and Universiti Malaya’s song. Upon completion of “bacaan doa”, Sdr. Eric Eow proceeded to the stage to give a speech, thanking all for the support for the EG. Next, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Malaya, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Razali B. Agus gave a speech before finally Dato Dr. Ng Yen Yen were invited to the stage to officiate the closing ceremony.

 

From then on, the ceremony proceeded with 3 stages of presentation of medals to the winners and runner-ups. In between the stages, entertainment and performances including chinese dance and dikir barat were cleverly slotted in to keep the crowd excited. Sdr. Kok Hee Poh, being the Immediate Past Chairman of the G&S Section, also took the opportunity to introduce IEM and its role in more detail to the students. By about 4.20 pm, the ceremony proceeded with the hand over of the Engineering Games Flag to the next host, UiTM, which followed by a dance performance by UiTM. The ceremony was concluded with a presentation of souvenirs to the VIPs and the singing of the Engineering Games 2003 official song.

Overall, EG2003 had been a success. Not only had it managed to encourage and provide opporturnity for engineering students and graduates from various universities to interact among themselves, it also proved to be a charity event as all the proceed that the organizing committee got will go to the Shelter Home for Abused Women and Children. The G/S committee would like to express their appreciation to the organizing committee as well as the sponsors and participants for the support and sportsmanship.
