The 10th Conference Meeting of Young
Engineers of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (YEAFEO)
was held from October 22 – 23, 2003 at the Sheraton Mustika Hotel,
Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This conference was organised by the Young
Engineers Forum, The Institution of Engineers, Indonesia (YEF-IEI).
Two representatives from the IEM Graduate and Student Section
(G&S), Sdr. Clement Tan Pey Bin and Sdr. Ngeow Yen Wan, attended
the event.
The first YEAFEO Board Meeting was held at 1.00
p.m. on Day 1 (22 October 2003). Earlier, during the opening
ceremony of the 21st Conference of the ASEAN Federation
of Engineering Organisation (CAFEO), the AFEO Distinguished
Fellowship Award had been conferred to Malaysian Prime Minister
Y.A.B. Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad. The meeting started
with a welcoming reception for all the delegates, who came from
Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and host
Indonesia. The organiser also welcomed the invited guests
(delegates from Japan), as observers for the 10th
YEAFEO. After all the delegates gave a short introduction of
themselves, matters in the minutes of the previous 9th
YEAFEO were discussed.
1. YEAFEO Logo
The YEAFEO Logo has officially been approved by
AFEO during CAFEO-20. A short introduction was given to all the
delegates on the meaning of the logo. The logo has been put up at
the YEAFEO official website.
2. YEAFEO Website
The Thai delegates gave a brief
introduction to the YEAFEO official website (www.yeafeo.org).
They urged all the delegates to provide each country’s details to
be uploaded onto this website.
3. Student Exchange Program
The members of YEAFEO have agreed to provide
information on their own country’s system of funding and
scholarship for higher education in their respective countries.
This information will be uploaded onto the YEAFEO website. A
period of 3 months has been given for the members to prepare the
information. Other suggestions included an exchange of students
who are going to embark on their practical training.
4. Cross Border Technical Visit
A suggestion on the possibility of
technical visits among the members was raised and discussed. This
was in accordance to Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir’s opening address
during the Opening Ceremony of the 21st CAFEO
conference, where he pointed out the need for engineering
institutions in each ASEAN country to get together, review and
discuss a new concept for an ASEAN network.
The host, YEF-IEI and incoming host, Union OF
Myanmar, Myanmar Engineering Society, reported the above matters
and outcome to the AFEO Governing Board on the Morning of Day 2.
On Day 2 (23 October 2003) at 10.00 a.m.,
country reports were presented. This was led by Thailand, followed
by Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Myanmar and finally
host Indonesia. Each country’s representative briefed the other
delegates about their objectives, organisation structure and
activities held over the past year. When it came to their turn,
delegates from Japan thanked the organiser for inviting them to
attend the 10th YEAFEO conference. It was their first
time attending this conference and they were representing the
Young Engineers Group. This was a sub-group from the Institute of
Professional Engineers, Japan (IPEJ), which was established in
1959 and had 1,600 certified engineers who were under 45 years
old.
At the end of YEAFEO-10, it was announced that
the next YEAFEO conference, the 11th YEAFEO will be
held in December 2004, in Myanmar.
The IEM G&S would like to thank the host,
YEF-IEI for their commitment and effort in making YEAFEO-10 a
great success. We would also like to express our gratitude and
appreciation to the IEM for sponsoring G&S members to participate
in the event.
