More than thirty people attended the
latest Welcome Function held for new graduate and student members of the IEM on
Saturday, 25 January 2003. Besides the normal presentations introducing the IEM,
G&S and the Route to PE, there was a short ice-breaking session, where the
participants had the opportunity to introduce themselves to each other and
explore their singing and composing talents at the same time!
The function officially
started at 2.15pm. The current Chairperson, Sdr. Clement Tan, first welcomed the
participants before a multimedia presentation was shown. This multimedia
presentation, which lasted ten minutes, detailed the history of the G&S,
beginning from its inception in 1970. Sdri. Kee Wai Fun then gave a brief
description and organisation of the IEM, followed by the various types of
membership available. A description of the objectives of the G&S section and its
sub-committees and their job function was also presented.
Sdri. Kee then continued
with the ice-breaking session, where she asked the participants to compose a
song containing all the names within each group. The participants grabbed this
opportunity to showcase their composing and singing skills, although there were
several grouses at the beginning at the session. However, it was apparent that
the participants had an enjoyable time throughout the ice-breaking session and
the G&S committee was pleasantly surprised by the final winner of the session, a
group which performed a rousing Chinese New Year tune accompanied by loud thumps
on the table!
After a short break for tea,
Sdr. Tan Chee Fai conducted the presentation on ‘Route to Become A Professional
Engineer’. In this session, the participants were briefed on the basic route
towards achieving professional engineering status. Basic requirements and
professional interview procedures were then explained.
Finally, Sdr. Yau Chau Fong
gave a short briefing regarding the G&S committee and the activities that it
organizes. At the end of the briefing, participants were urged to volunteer
themselves to join the G&S committee and/or various sub-committees. The Q&A
session then commenced and the G&S committee members were kept busy replying
questions fielded by the participants.
The Welcome Function ended
at 5:30pm, with most of the participants commenting that they had had a good
time, and having gained more information about the IEM and the G&S. It is hoped
that in future, more new members would be able to attend these functions and
volunteer themselves towards the success of the G&S. G&S BOLEH!
